The new kid on the baize

0

In a couple of years, Michaela Tabb might not be the only female referee on the pro tour. A new star is rising in the snooker  universe.

Molly Newbold is only 17-years-old and has already refereed five matches at the Masters qualifiers, one of the matches involving Robert Milkins and Barry Pinches.

Tabb is of course Newbold’s biggest idol and role model.  Newbold has the same composed, focused attitude as Tabb and even though she was indeed nervous about the matches, her performance at the event was really impressive. The merits don’t stop there.

Newbold has also refereed exhibition matches with Ronnie O’Sullivan, Jimmy White and Mark Allen and supervised a frame where Mark Selby compiled a maximum break.

So what was it that dragged this young girl into the absorbing game of snooker? Well, her interest was sparked thanks to her Dad, who taught her the rules of the game while watching television. For some reason, Newbold wasn’t as interested in playing snooker herself as she was in the refereeing part.

Her biggest goal is to become a full-time snooker referee, even though she has an impressive academic background. We might see this young woman refereeing a World Championship final sooner than we think. Time will tell.

Jimmy in the jungle

As some of you might already know, Jimmy White has decided to give up his spot in the UK Championship qualifiers in favour of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here.

As much as we would have loved to see White play snooker, observing his behaviour in the jungle can still be very interesting. Fans will get to know the man himself in greater depth and will possibly discover new sides to him.

This could certainly get entertaining as White seems to have all the typical traits for a reality show participant. In an interview before the show, White explained that he’s very wary of people, he’s the kind of person who will bolt away if hitting difficulties within a group, and that he has a phobia about snakes.

He doesn’t enjoy camping either and seems to be one of those people who really values comfort. All of which could definitely make for a couple of amusing scenarios.

Being a snooker player though, White is equipped with a strong, composed mind which makes him mentally fit for all the trying jungle adventures that await him. White is also a perfect gentleman, so there probably won’t be any juicy conflicts between him and the other contestants either.

Jimmy White on a roll?

We haven’t seen the last of Jimmy White, definitely not. The second event of the 2009 World Series of Snooker proved that he can still beat players like current and former world champions John Higgins and Graeme Dott.

Despite the massive enthusiasm for snooker on the European continent, no ranking tournaments are held there. Luckily there are a number of competitions. One of the bigger that’s been held recently is the World Series of Snooker in Prague. Four of the big names played against four Czech wildcards. All the wildcard matches ended 5-0 except for the match between John Higgins and Lukáš Křenek that ended 5-1. These results certainly look a bit depressing but the fact that Jimmy White managed to take the title was an incredibly positive thing. Not only because the Whirlwind is a favourite among almost all snooker fans but also because five years had passed between White’s Sangsom 6-Red Grand Prix victory earlier this year and his last professional title. He also made the highest break of the tournament.

This might be proof that Jimmy is worth more than his spot in 56th in the world rankings and that he’s having a career boost in mind. His fans haven’t forgotten him and they never will.
